This companion guide provides verified links and heritage records for the United Kingdom's most distinguished public model railways and historic minimum gauge lines.
Pendon Museum of Miniature Landscape
Widely regarded as the pinnacle of miniature modelmaking in the world. Founded by Roye England, Pendon recreates rural England in the 1920s and 1930s with extraordinary architectural fidelity, featuring the vast Vale of White Horse layout and the iconic Dartmoor timber viaduct.
Pecorama & The Beer Heights Light Railway
Perched high on the cliffs above Lyme Bay, Pecorama is the tourist home of PECO, Britain's premier model railway track manufacturer. It features celebrated exhibition layouts across multiple gauges and the famed Beer Heights Light Railway carrying passengers through nine acres of hillside gardens.
Gainsborough Model Railway
One of the largest and most ambitious hand-built 'O' gauge model railways in the United Kingdom. Built and operated by a dedicated voluntary society since 1946, it faithfully replicates the East Coast Main Line from London King's Cross to Leeds Central with authentic LNER steam locomotives and period signaling.
Brighton Toy and Model Museum
Housed in four atmospheric Victorian cellar arches beneath Brighton Railway Station, this treasure-house museum displays over 10,000 historic toys and working models, centered around rare working vintage layouts by Hornby, Bassett-Lowke, and Bing from the golden age of British model railways.
Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway
Famously dubbed 'The World's Smallest Public Railway'. Conceived by racing driver Captain J.E.P. Howey and Count Louis Zborowski, this celebrated 13.5-mile passenger railway operates one-third scale mainline express steam locomotives across the flat expanse of Romney Marsh to the shingle promontory of Dungeness.
Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway ('La'al Ratty')
One of the oldest and most scenic minimum-gauge railways in existence. Running seven miles from the only coastal village in the Lake District National Park at Ravenglass inland to the foot of Scafell Pike at Dalegarth in Eskdale, it features historic miniature steam and diesel locomotives traversing wild Cumbrian valleys.
Bure Valley Railway
Norfolk's longest 15-inch minimum-gauge steam railway, running nine idyllic miles between the historic market town of Aylsham and Wroxham at the heart of the Norfolk Broads. The line meanders through lush countryside alongside the River Bure, operating a handsome fleet of purpose-built miniature steam engines.
Fairbourne Miniature Steam Railway
Operating for over a century along the dramatic coastline of Cardigan Bay, the Fairbourne Railway runs two miles from Fairbourne village along a sand spit to Penrhyn Point, connecting via ferry to Barmouth. Its half-size steam locomotives represent legendary heritage craft in a breathtaking Welsh estuary setting.
